Below, we explain the difference between the two types of rechargeable batteries: lithium-ion and silver-zinc.
Lithium-Ion
Hearing aids that use lithium-ion batteries are a complete device, and the batteries are in a sealed case. A fully charged device can last up to 24 hours with basic use. It does support smart phone streaming technology, but it will shorten how long your batteries last before needing to be recharged.
In switching to this type of rechargeable hearing aid, you do not need to worry about changing the battery. The lithium-ion battery cannot be removed, except by the manufacturer. That means the device will need to be replaced after four to five years. To ensure the longevity of the device, proper maintenance – including using a dehumidifier – is necessary.
Silver-Zinc
The silver-zinc battery can be used with most hearing aids to replace traditional zinc-air batteries, but you will need to purchase a docking station. When fully charged these batteries can last up to 18 hours. Aside from the updated batteries and docking station, there is no need to purchase additional batteries each month.
As an added bonus, the standard zinc-air batteries will continue to work in many of the new devices. This especially important to know if your batteries need to be switched out if you have an emergency.
