Why Does My Hearing Aid Keep Beeping?

Having hearing loss is something that many people in the US and around the world experience. No matter the cause of your hearing loss, here at Audiology & Hearing Aid Solutions, we are here to guide you through your hearing loss treatment every step of the way!

If you experience hearing loss and already have a hearing aid, you may, on occasion, experience issues with its functionality. Hearing aids are just like the other technology in our lives – be it our phones, TVs, cars or stoves – they can malfunction just as easily.

In this post, we will explore potential reasons for your hearing aid beeping – and how to resolve them quickly and easily!

Common Causes of Hearing Aid Beeping

Let’s dive straight in with the most common causes of hearing aids beeping. A beeping hearing aid can be a pretty annoying experience, but hopefully with our guidance you’ll get to the bottom of why your hearing aid seems to be complaining!

Your Hearing Aid Is Running Out of Battery

Your hearing aid might be running out of battery – the problem could be that simple! When a standard hearing aid begins to run out of battery, it will emit a regular beeping sound to let the wearer know that the battery needs to be recharged or replaced. Make sure you try recharging or replacing your hearing aid battery before you consider other, more serious issues as the cause of the beeping!

Your Hearing Aid Is Turned Up Too Loud

If the volume on your hearing aid is too loud, it will often have feedback that sounds like a whistling or beeping sound. This feedback is caused by reverberations of sound around your ear canal and can be extrapolated by excess wax in the ear.

Try turning your hearing aid down or visiting your audiologist for a revision of your treatment plan, if feedback is causing the beeping.

Your Hearing Aid Needs to Be Reset

Sometimes, if the program of your hearing aid is wrong, it will beep intermittently. You will need to ask your audiologist how to reset your hearing aid to its original programming, to stop the beeping. You may be able to get instructions for this over the phone or if not, you can bring your hearing aid to us and speak to your audiologist in person!

A Button on Your Hearing Aid Is Stuck

If your hearing aid has specific settings that you can alter using buttons, it is a common occurrence that a button might be stuck. This could be from debris getting lodged in the buttonhole, or perhaps simply from wear and tear of your hearing aid.

One way of fixing this, or even preventing it, is to clean your hearing aid regularly to ensure you dislodge any debris that might have been caught on it. If the beeping has already started, take your hearing aid to your local audiologist and you will be able to sort the beeping out with them!

The Wiring in Your Hearing Aid Is Loose, Causing Phantom Issues.

Just like any technology that we use on a daily basis, the wiring on your hearing aid is intricate and complex. If something comes loose inside the hearing aid itself, it can cause intermittent beeping or feedback that can be very annoying for the wearer!

If you suspect that your hearing aid’s wiring is loose, make sure to visit your audiologist as soon as possible, to rectify the wiring problem. It could be that it is easier to replace the hearing aid altogether – your audiologist will give you all the options when they inspect your hearing aid in person!

Which Type of Hearing Aid Is Prone to Beeping

  • In the Ear (ITE)
  • Behind the Ear (BTE)
  • In the Canal (ITC)

All hearing aids can beep if there is something wrong or if their battery is low. However, BTE hearing aids, which pick up sound due to their larger size, might be more prone to beeping than other types of hearing aids.
