Have a glass of wine it’s summer time, and it’s good for your hearing and mind! Researchers at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit reported some interesting results in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

The study funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders found that a substance found in red grapes and red wine, Resveratrol, may act as a protection from hearing loss and cognitive decline.

Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against the body’s inflammatory process as it relates to aging, cognition, and hearing loss.“We’ve shown that by giving animals resveratrol, we can reduce the amount of hearing and cognitive decline”, stated Dr. Michael D. Seidman, Head & Neck Surgery.

It’s a large leap from rats to people, but the research suggests we may be able to reduce the incidence of hearing loss in the future. Until then, continue using ear protection and avoid loud sounds whenever possible.  Drink up and enjoy that glass of wine at dinner time.  Now you can say that you’re protecting your ears and keeping a healthy mind.  We can ‘cheers’ to that.
